John
W. Bates
Secretary
John W. Bates has been a member of the Rotary Club of
Americus, Georgia, since 1982, serving as president in 1994-1995 and in
1999 receiving the first "Four Avenues of Service" citation given by
Americus Rotary. He served as a GRSP Line Trustee from 1998 until elected
Secretary in 2003. He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a Will Watt
Fellow, and a Hue Thomas Fellow.
He was a member of the faculty of Georgia Southwestern State University
from 1982 through 1999, serving as Director of the Center for Business
Administration from 1996-1998. Before joining Georgia Southwestern, he was
employed 11 years with the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority as
Senior Transportation Planner and Manager of Marketing and Research; and
for nine years with the State Highway Department of Georgia.
A native of Bainbridge, Georgia, he graduated from Bainbridge High School
in 1957, received the Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree from Georgia
Tech in 1962, the Master of Business Administration Degree from Georgia
State in 1967, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration
Degree from Georgia State in 1981.
He has been married to the former Harriet Smith, a retired public
librarian, since 1961. They have two children: son Andrew, wife Kimberly
and two sons, Jacob and Samuel, live in Louisville, Kentucky where Andrew
is a management analyst with the Louisville-Jefferson County Department of
Human Services and a captain in the Kentucky National Guard and veteran of
service in Afghanistan; daughter Robin is a teaching assistant at Auburn
University where she is completing a doctoral degree in English.
